Okbet Casino Poker | Patrik Antonius on Losing the Great Durrrr Challenge: “I Was Overconfident and Arrogant”

Okbet Poker is a card game that is played in many different variations around the world. In each version, a player has the option to “call,” which means to match the bet, “raise,” which means to increase the wager, or “fold,” which means to give up the hand (i.e., fold). Its roots in North America may explain why the continent is where it has found the most success. It can be played in a variety of settings, including homes, poker rooms, casinos, and the virtual world. Play and language from the card game poker are pervasive in American society to the point that it has been nicknamed the national card game.

The poker literature describes innumerable different poker variants, yet they all have the same core elements. Five cards are needed to make a poker hand. The mathematical frequency of a certain combination of cards is inversely proportional to the value of that combination of cards; in other words, the stronger the hand, the rarer the combination of cards. A player can make a bet that they have the best hand, and the other players must either call (i.e. match) the stake or fold. Players can bluff by making a wager as if they have the best hand when they do not, and if players with better hands do not call, the bettor will win the pot.

Okbet Poker great Patrik Antonius opened up about his time on High Stakes Poker and Full Tilt Poker, as well as his explanation for losing the notorious 2009 Durrrr Challenge to Tom Dwan, on the Brandon Adams Podcast.

The Finnish high-stakes poker pro talked for 90 minutes about the unbelievable sums of money he had wagered on golf and boxing prop bets. A potential inductee into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2021, he was a top name in the game during the heyday of online poker in the 2000s.

The Challenge of Durrrr

For 50,000 hands of $200/$400 heads-up pot-limit Omaha on Full Tilt Poker in 2009, Dwan (aka “durrrr”), perhaps the best online poker player at the time, challenged pretty much anyone. If durrrr ended up losing the match, he would have to pay the other competitor an extra $1.5 million.

In the early going, Antonius accepted the challenge and had a lead of almost $500,000 by the time the hand count reached 13,000. Dwan, though, swiftly reversed the situation and went on to dominate the rest of the match. After playing around 40,000 hands and losing over $2 million, Antonius decided to call it a day. On the Brandon Adams Podcast, he supposedly detailed what had gone wrong.

It was my fault, Antonius said, that he lost the challenge. “Despite never having done it before in my life, I consented to play four tables simultaneously. So far, I had only ever played heads-up at a maximum of two tables at once. If I could play ring games, I could play at four tables at once.”

Live cash game shows like Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker have also given Antonius and Dwan plenty of opportunities to square off against one another.

Indeed, the marathon online competition was the first significant heads-up high-stakes online okbet poker challenge. In the future, Dwan would also fight Dan “Jungleman” Cates, but he declined to finish the challenge and lost a lot of money to Cates as a result. He has since sought compensation from durrrr for not finishing the task, and he maintains a glimmer of hope that the two would renew their rivalry.

During an interview after the first Durrrr Challenge, the loser admitted that he “really should have practiced to play four tables” before competing. He was “very smug and arrogant,” he said, because he was so sure of himself that he could beat a formidable opponent like Dwan.

“For me, (Dwan) was the worst possible opponent. Because of this, I was able to get away with too much bluffing with him. Antonius noted, “He had a completely different style than others, and I had a hard time adjusting to his play,” however he also claimed that Phil Ivey and Viktor “Isildur1” “His best online opponents were Blom.

More six-figure pots were won during the Durrrr Challenge than we can keep track of. With queens full of sixes, Antonius defeated a hand with sixes full of nines to win a $471,000 prize, one of the largest in the tournament.
